Visiting Scientist Program

Scientist Information

This site is designed to allow scientists (like yourself) to interact with teachers and students. The objective is to enrich and improve science education in the Commonwealth. These interactions may be through electronic advising (email, homepages, etc.) but there will also be opportunities for in-school presentations.

Advising involves guiding and inspiring students to work toward their own excellence. It will have far-reaching effects. We appreciate your interest in this project and we hope you would like to get involved.

Involvement in this program offers a unique opportunity to help students develop a true understanding of science, the scientific method and science ethics. It is also a wonderful way to share your enthusiasm for science directly with an interested young person.

If you do volunteer to work with us in this project please consider the following:

  • Please review requests and respond in a timely manner.

  • Keep a record of the time you have spent advising and report this and any other comments to the VRSN coordinator.

  • If requests for help become too numerous and you feel you cannot answer effectively, contact the program coordinator and additional requests will be restricted until you indicate you are ready for more.

  • If you do visit a classroom, work closely with the teacher to develop a presentation to fit the needs of the students you will be meeting. Be sure that all logistical matters are clear and well planned. Be ready to share your enthusiasm with the students; your excitement will leave the most lasting impression.

  • Always try to encourage critical thinking and work with the students to demonstrate good experimental design and appropriate science ethics.
